Children in the day school are unable to access the mainstream education system. They range in age from 10 to 18. Most were illiterate when they joined the Centre. All have made tremendous progress. They are given school lessons as well as vocational training both within the Centre and at a local government run training centre. To date they have been given lessons in English, computers, sewing, fine art, photography, music, karate, dancing, bag weaving, card making and mechanics. They have excelled in their handicraft work and are currently selling work to Barefoot, Sri Lanka’s leading handicraft’s store, as well as a local garment factory.
The aim is to ensure that the children can access secure employment. The girls are at high risk of abuse and need close supervision. Attendance at the monthly parents’ meetings is mandatory.
